You may typically be a very motivated person but life’s circumstances have left you frozen in a state of no energy, no passion, and no hope to recapture your customary motivation. These self motivation tips will help get you back the on the motivated track.
- Forget the past.
Many times it is an event that has already occurred that saps us of our motivation. We waste precious physical and mental energy dwelling on this event. Whether it was words that were spoken or an action we took, it is over.
Resolve to waste no more time wishing it hadn’t happened. The greatest Christian writer to ever live once said , “I forget the past and press on forward toward the goal.”
- Focus on the future.
Have a “moving forward” mindset. Challenges and problems try to stop us in our tracks. Tell yourself to just keep moving forward. Think of where you will be once you move beyond the challenge you are facing.
- Formulate solutions.
We tend to dissect the problem from every possible angle. We think about it and talk about it endlessly as if that is going to help us. It won’t. For example, if you have a health problem don’t spend your time telling everybody about it. They can’t do one thing to help you. Instead research what can be done. Can you change your diet? Is there an exercise that will help? Is there a medical specialist that can help? What about a massage therapist?
Write all the possible solutions down. Don’t leave anything off. Imagine that you had unlimited resources and list all possible things you can do to move forward.
- Finalize your plan.
Take your list of solutions and prioritize them. Start with things you can do immediately after completing your plan. If one of your solutions is to take a walk then you might place it first. As soon as you finalize your plan, take a walk. Methodically move through your list. Add other parts to the solution as you think of them.
- Find time to pray.
This is one of the self motivation tips we often overlook. We can get so caught up in our problems and challenges that we forget to pray. Pray without ceasing. Prayer changes things.
In the March, 2007 issue of Research on Social Work Practice, David Hodge a professor at Arizona State University, presents evidence that prayer has a positive effect on people with psychological or medical problems. Pray.
- Factor in fun.
We can take ourselves and our problems too seriously. No matter what you’re going through find a way to have some fun.
