Motivation to Exercise

Finding the motivation to exercise is very important to your success in this challenging area of life. Most people will say they want to exercise but can’t ever make it a regular part of their life.

Here are some of the common obstacles we face with our exercise program and how we can overcome them so we don’t lose our motivation to exercise:

  • Obstacle: I don’t have time.
  • Solutions:

    1. Try early morning workouts.

    2. Break your workouts into smaller time periods.

    3. When doing your resistance training perform supersets instead of taking long breaks between sets.

  • Obstacle: I get bored.
  • Solutions:

1.Mix up your routine. Do different forms of cardio such as running, cycling, rowing, etc.

    2. Use a heart rate monitor. This instant feedback on your workout will help prevent boredom.

    3. Find a workout buddy. Working out alongside another person will usually help your motivation to exercise stay fresh.

    4. Reward yourself for reaching various exercise goals.

  • Obstacle: I miss too many workouts.
  • Solutions:

    1. Find someone to hold you accountable. Report to this person on a regular basis.

    2. Keep a monthly calendar on your desk and note when you exercise. This helps you see if you are skipping too many days between workouts.

    3. Set some short term attainable goals and keep a journal of your progress.

  • Obstacle: I just don’t see the need to exercise.
  • Solutions:

    1. Consider how you will look.

    2. Consider how you will feel.

    3. Consider the different diseases that exercise helps prevent such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

    4. Finally, remember the effect exercise has on your appearance.

It is very normal to experience periods where we simply don't feel motivated to exercise. Taking breaks from our workout routine can be very beneficial. The problem is when we simply can't get our motivation to return.

We lose aerobic capacity if we skip our cardio workouts for too long. The same is true with our weight training. We start losing some of the lean muscle we worked so hard to gain if we stay away from the weights too long.

Use these tips to help you get back on track so that you will remain in optimum health and fitness.
